    Let's visit Diane Flynt, Slow Food Piedmont Triad convivium member and heirloom apple farmer, for a picnic and cider tasting on Foggy Ridge Cider's grand opening day!

    Foggy Ridge Cider opens for visitors on Saturday May 26 with a Spring Festival. See Ashmead's Kernel, Black Limbertwig, Cox's Orange Pippin and over 30 apple varieties in bloom. Taste Foggy Ridge hard ciders paired with artisan cheese while listening to local musicians.

    We'll carpool from Greensboro and Winston Salem. Foggy Ridge Cider is about one hour from W-S and one hour forty-five minutes from Greensboro, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in southwest Virginia. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch. The tasting is free and served with a pairing of cheeses, and guests can also purchase a glass (or two) of cider to enjoy on the grounds or in the orchard. There will be bottled water for those who can't drink alcohol, but do plan to bring your own non-alcoholic drinks.

    Please RSVP if possible to lponeill@slowfoodpiedmont.org by May 23 so that I can give Diane a sense of how much cheese to buy. However, if you decide to come at the last minute without RSVPing, she welcomes you! When you RSVP, I'll let you know where the carpools will meet.

    Flavors of Appalachia is a food festival celebrating Appalachian food traditions with food talks cooking demonstrations, and information about food preservation, cheese making, traditional drinks, wild native edible plants, and organic farming in the past and today.

    The first food talk is given at 11 am by Fred Sauceman who has just released his book “The Place Setting,” a wonderful guide to down home cooking in the southern Appalachians. He will talk about iconic Appalachian food products, southern barbecue and some of his food heroes.

    The second food talk at 1 pm is by Nancy Carter Crump, author of the book “Hearthside Cooking,” a history of Virginia foodways. Using period directions and recipes from both published and manuscript sources, Mrs. Carter Crump will explore many of the open-hearth cooking methods used to create the meals that were presented at elegant dining tables in the early years of the Old Dominion.

    Booths will be staffed by persons with hands on experience in cheese making, meat smoking, honey production, canning and organic farming and more.

    Participants will be able to taste traditional mountain drinks, mead, cider and wine (bring your ID) made by local farm producers Black Snake Meadery , Foggy Ridge Cider, and Villa Appalaccia.

    Brunswick stew and corn bread will be served for lunch (12-2 pm). Traditional recipes involving apples, wild meats and mushrooms and greens will be discussed during cooking demonstrations by chefs of Oddfellas Cantina and Zeppoli’s.

    This event is organized by the Slow Food Blue Ridge, a convivium who brings together food loving individuals in Floyd and surrounding counties, committed to sharing and celebrating and informing about the joys of good, clean, sustainably grown foods and wines, slowly enjoyed in the company of friends and family.

    'Farm to Fork' Picnic Honoring Carlo Petrini

    In a unique collaboration, the region's most acclaimed cooks will pair with Piedmont farmers to prepare a picnic-style supper that celebrates our local foods and the people who grow and make them. The meal will feature Piedmont farm food and represent the bounty and diversity of our region and community, including barbecued heritage pigs, the last of the local asparagus and strawberries, deviled eggs from pastured chicken prepared by the farmer herself, an old-fashioned Southern dessert table, farmstead cheese, cabrito - Monterrey-style goat slow-roasted underground on hot rocks, a head-to tail pork tasting and forgotten breads from 18th century sources from a wood-fired oven.

    The family-friendly evening will also feature a bluegrass picking session with Kickin' Grass, a pea-shelling contest for the kids and a chance to visit with the whey-fed pigs while they have their supper.

    The 'Farm to Fork' picnic is brought to you by NC Choices, Slow Food Triangle and SEEDS and kicks-off Eat Local Triangle - a month long calendar of events and activities in June, 2007 sponsored by Slow Food Triangle, focusing on the connection of local foods to flavor, health, local economies, environment and land preservation.

There will be an ice cream churn-off contest, educational exhibits, dairy cows, games and lots of goodies from SUDIA and ice cream to the first 300 to participate in a dairy/4-H quiz. Come on out and learn how important milk and milk products play in the health and quality of our life.
