    Movies about Sustainability and Food

April must be movie month in the Piedmont Triad! First, let's announce the one that Slow Food is sponsoring, BUT there are many great films scheduled before that date:

    UPDATE! "King Corn"

    Friday, April 27, 2007.

Meet the members of Slow Food Piedmont Triad at the Green Bean, a locally-owned coffee shop in downtown Greensboro at 341 S. Elm Street, for an hour of connection with old and new friends beginning at 7 p.m., a movie at 8:00 p.m., and discussion about the movie afterwards.

This is a rare opportunity to see a sneak preview of the documentary King Corn, as it has been shown only 5 or 6 times in the U.S. The filmmakers made it on their own and it is now making the film festival circuit.

The movie is free, but we will ask for donations to send to the filmmakers to help them toward recovering the costs of production. There will be a couple of DVDs for sale.

From one of our Slow Food members: "King Corn is a fun and informative look at the life of corn from the farm to the feedlot and grocery store through the eyes of two college grads who rent an acre of farmland in Iowa on which to grow their own corn. Viewers are introduced to local farmers, townsfolk, agricultural agents, university scientists, and Michael Pollan along the way. This is a delightful, no-hype, enjoyable documentary that is more in the spirit of 'The Real Dirt On Farmer John' than 'The Future of Food.'"

Meet other Slow Foodies and socialize at 7:00 p.m. Stay after the movie for discussion of the film! Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.

    Energy Film Festival

Sponsored by the Sierra Club, Greensboro Public Library, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, League of Women Voters, and Temple Emanuel, a series of films focusing on energy issues will be presented throughout the month of April at Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch Library, 1420 Price Park Drive, Greensboro, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church located at 607 North Greene Street. Please see the Sierra Club web site for details.

"Black Gold: Wake Up and Smell The Coffee"

A Documentary about Fair Trade Certification

Black Gold has been shown around the world to educate the public about causes and solutions to poverty for coffee farmers around the world. 5 million coffee farmers have joined Fair Trade Certification as a way to earn a fairer wage for their coffee. Come, watch the documentary, and learn ways you can make a difference in your own actions and community. Co-sponsored by Deep Roots Market, who will be providing fair-trade coffee for the event. It will be presented free to the public twice:

  • Tuesday, April 3 - 5:30 p.m., Weatherspoon Art Museum, UNCG

Downtown Farmer's Market in Winston Salem

The Downtown Market at the Werehouse in Winston Salem begins its second season Saturday, April 21st and will run until the autumn of 2007.

The organizers of the Downtown Market say that it "was founded with a desire to see Winston-Salem’s food economy and food culture grow. This growth is one that emphasizes high quality, great tasting, fresh, and natural produce, eggs, milk, and honey which can be found at our market, in addition to locally prepared foods, baked goods, artisan crafts, garden items, plants and more. We want to make locally and ecologically produced food items more accessible to the general public and to the downtown community. We want to encourage local commerce, and help to create a dialogue in the community about food, nurture existing relationships, and build new ones."

Conveniently located near the intersection of US-52 and I-40 at 211 E. Third St., the market's location allows for quick and easy access for vendors and customers. Also, it is situated just outside of Krankie's Coffee Bar, also the home of Maria's Coffee Roasting. Krankie's is located inside of The Werehouse, a center for art, music, and community events for the past ten years in Winston Salem.

The Downtown Market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday. Spaces are free but donations are gladly accepted. Items for sale must be locally produced or grown. Please contact Mitchell Britt at (336) 327-5078 for more information about the Downtown Market, or email downtownmarketws@yahoo.com. See www.werehousefarmersmarket.org for a map and updates.
