What is Slow Food?

Slow Food promotes the pleasure of good food and the integrity of local cultures that grow it. It envisions a region with local markets, restaurants, and small farms overflowing with fresh food and food choices.

It began in Italy at the foot of the Spanish Steps as a protest against McDonalds and the fast, industrial culture it represents. Since then, Slow Food has evolved into a world-wide movement of 85,000 focused on the preservation, marketing, cooking and eating of seasonal, local foods. Slow Food works to honor food traditions, care for the land, and support the survival of our small farmers. There are 12,000 members in the US alone.

Locally, Slow Food is represented by Slow Food Piedmont Triad. Our group is comprised of people from a broad range of backgrounds, all fun-loving, all committed to the enjoyment of eating good food and supporting our local food community.

We believe that preparing, sharing, and tasting food is one of the greatest joys of life. Knowing and buying from your farmer connects you to and conserves the land. Buying local organic food and growing your own is even better. With each mouthful we enjoy the flavors of our region, renew our health, and secure our future.

In both thought and action, Slow Food Piedmont Triad promotes a slower, more harmonious rhythm of life. Local initiatives include providing food education, promoting the sustainable use of land, identifying endangered food species, and supporting artisan producers, slow restaurants, and small farmers.
